Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is a dynamic, flowing and acrobatic form of yoga with a strong breathing system at its core
The practice consists of a series of postures (asana) linked together by a specific sequence of movements known as vinyasa, building heat and intensifying as the session deepens. Each movement is synchronised with the breath, creating a meditative and flowing practice. An incredibly healing and deeply transformative practice, we begin to experience a feeling of balance and a strong sense of energy permeating every cell in the body. The beauty and elegance of this practice lies in its simplicity and practical nature. Because of this, the effects of this yoga are immediate and can be felt quite viscerally.
No stone is left unturned in this traditional technique, working the body from the inside out, evident in the re-tuning of the inner organs to the radiance of your skin. Ashtanga Yoga works all the major systems of the body including the skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and the reproductive system. The result is an extremely strong, youthful and flexible body with more natural ease, lightness and increased range of movement. Improved digestion, increased lung capacity, better cardiovascular health, boosted immune system and improved sleep are just a few of the benefits. The effect on the nervous system cannot be overstated as we reawaken and revitalise old neural pathways as well as carving new beneficial connections.
Perhaps the most significant effect of this practice is the increased sense of peace, harmony and stillness that many students experience. Mental and emotional balance is a natural effect of practice. Benefits to look out for: increased happiness, boosted confidence, increased motivation and productivity, mental clarity and focus, lower levels of stress and anxiety. Fellowship is at the heart of House of Ashtanga, providing an opportunity for individuals to connect with like-minded people and build a sense of community. Practicing together can help you feel supported and motivated. One of the real joys of teaching has been seeing the development of friendships and overall sense of camaraderie in the yoga room. You will breathe, you will sweat, you will smile, you will love!
